Golden Girl Rue McClanahan Cancels SF Appearance

The Golden Girls: Blanche DevereauxOh noes!  Blanche Devereaux isn’t feeling so well!

Golden Girls alum Rue McClanahan had to cancel her November 14th appearance at the Castro Theatre right here in San Francisco due to heart problems!

The appearance was all part of a tribute to the actress, with a full on-stage interview and partial proceeds going to the AIDS Housing Alliance.

But no more!  Here’s what poor Rue had to say about her cancellation:

“My darlings, I’m just devastated that I am going to have to miss my own tribute at the Castro Theatre.  Unfortunately, my doctor has laid down the law, and I’m currently having some maintenance on the old ticker. Trust me, I’d much rather be in San Francisco having fun and being adored by all of you.”

Aw.  Get better quick, Miss Blanche Devereaux!  I just couldn’t bear the thought of another Golden Girls casualty anytime soon.

THIS JUST IN: Somebody got a Bea Arthur tattoo!

Bea Arthur tattoo

We here at Square Eyes HQ are devoted to giving you the latest breaking Golden Girls news, especially when someone gets inked with an image of the fantastic foursome. This particular forearm/Bea homage belongs to comedian Eliot Glazer, who tweeted the image of his new tat yesterday morning.

Well played, Glazer!  Though I must say, I’m still partial to the “Stay Golden” laptop.

Post-script: It was revealed recently that Bea Arthur left $300,000 in her will to the Ali Forney Center in New York, which houses homeless LGBT kids.  They were able to build another property wtih her generous donation.  Truly a lady worthy of being homage’d.

Betty White to Guest Star on 30 Rock!

30 Rock: Betty WhiteZOMG!  This week just keeps getting better and better…

Living legend, national treasure, and Square Eyes favorite Betty White, formerly of The Golden Girls, has signed on for a guest spot on other Square Eyes favorite, 30 Rock!

Ms.White will reportedly be playing herself on the award-winning NBC comedy series.

And this is all from the mouth of Tina Fey herself!

Fey reportedly also wants to get Justin Timberlake in for a guest role.  But enough about him!  Back to Betty!

Does anyone else smell Emmy for Betty White for her future role on 30 Rock? She’s been hitting the guest spot circuit pretty hard lately, even earning an Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series” for My Name is Earl this year. Betty on 30 Rock will surely be nothing short of unbeatable.

Betty White FTW!  Get excited, people!

The Golden Girls

ZOMG!  Could this day get any better?

Jezebel’s got the scoop:

According to a press release, Disney’s announced “a Latin American reversioning” of The Golden Girls, Los Años Dorados. It’s tailored for a Hispanic audience with actresses from Mexico, Colombia and Cuba; set in Miami and filming in Venezuela. ¿Cheesecake, anyone?

Oh HELL YES!  I haven’t been this excited since the Turkish Golden Girls were announced.

What do you think?  Blanche Deveraux, Dorothy Zbornak, Rose Nyland, and Sophia Petrillo recast with a group of senior Latinas?  Muy bien!

I hope the “reversioning” includes infusing The Golden Chicas with some local flavor.  Flan instead of cheesecake?

If you know anything about Square Eyes, you know we’re mad about The Golden Girls.  And thus, these Square Eyes have decided to take the next step in ultimate fandom and immortalize this love in ink.

May I present to you my latest work of body art: Blanche Deveraux, Rose Nyland, Sophia Petrillo, and Dorothy Zbornak etched into my skin! Some might say the idea for this tattoo just fell into my lap, hyuk hyuk hyuk.  Peep:

Golden Girls thigh tattoo

JK JK JK!  Those totally aren’t my thighs.  Pretty awesome though, right?  I appreciate this thigh-owner’s commitment to staying golden.

Mom: if you’re reading this, I was just kidding, okay?  No tattoos here.  Sheesh.

Jimmy Fallon & Betty White Play Beer Pong

Posted by KAT in Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Golden Girls

I gotta tell ya, though I had my doubts, Jimmy Fallon is on his way to becoming the awesomest talk show host of our time.

Last night, on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the J-man challenged Golden Girl/national treasure Betty White to a game of beer pong.  Observe:

How charming is she?  We love us some old ladies here at Square Eyes.

Looks like Fallon finally broke his losing street with this victory over White.  He’d previously been beaten by Anna Kournikova, Serena Williams and Ivanka Trump.

Sandra Bullock & Ryan Reynolds Behind the Scenes

Let me tell you folks, the latest Funny or Die video is a hoot!

The clip features a behind-the-scenes look on the set of the film The Proposal, starring Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds (Who? Oh yeah, that guy), and Betty White.  Take a look:

At the risk of turning Square Eyes into Golden Girls Fan Club Headquarters, I’ve got to say I side with Sandra Bullock on this one.  Betty White, a national treasure!  A living legend!  Ryan Reynolds (Who?  Oh yeah, that guy) ain’t got nothing on Rose Nyland.

Old ladies cussing rules.  Glad to see B.White hasn’t lost her spark.  Lookin’ good, Betty!

A Final Square Eyes Tribute to Bea Arthur

Bea Arthur

As you all probably know, all of us here at Square Eyes HQ have been mourning Bea Arthur like nobody’s business.  It’s been heartwarming to watch all the Bea tributes rolling in all over the Internets, but it also serves to bum this lady out a bit.  Ms. Bea will truly be missed.

But let the tributes continue, I say!  I thought I’d take this opportunity to share an awesome Bea moment, one that falls after both Maude and Golden Girls on the Bea timeline.

I’m talking about the Sex and the City parody, starring Bea Arthur as Carrie!  Take a look at these classic broads:

Genius, no?  You may recognize Sally Struthers as Samantha, Charlotte Rae (Mrs. Garrett from Facts of Life!) as Charlotte, and Katherine Helmond (Mona from Who’s the Boss?!) as Miranda.  Two kudos to Katherine Helmond for taking the tougher route and being typecast as a redhead rather than a slut.

Heck, why not throw in one more!  Here’s Bea on The Golden Girls in her signature role as Dorothy Zbornak, with the amazing Estelle Getty (RIP as well!) as Sopha “Ma” Petrillo, singing “I Got You Babe”:

So good!  Like Erin, I haven’t been cast as a Dorothy in the online quizzes (I’m a Blanche, okay? You don’t get Dorothy looking THIS good), but I’ve always been envious of that razor sharp wit and impeccable comedic timing.

Sigh.  I’ve gotta stop right there, all this nostalgia has got me doing one of these:

The Golden Girls: Dorothy Zbnorak

We love you, Bea!

Thank You for Bea-ing a Friend - R.I.P. Bea Arthur

Bea Arthur photo Don't you wish your girlfriend were hot like BeaKat and I are proud Golden Girls fans - we can muse and laugh about those four sassy senior ladies for hours and a day. You can guess that we were already depressed as hell when Estelle “Sophia Petrillo” Getty passed away last July, so today’s news of Bea “Dorothy Zbornak” Arthur leaving us at age 86 has resulted in countless frowny-faced smileys :(

My friends and numerous online quizzes tell me that I have a ‘Sophia’ personality, but I’ve always wished I were more like Dorothy Zbornak; IMO, the raddest of all the Golden Girls and a character brought to full-flavored, brassy dameness by the comedic talents of Bea Arthur. With those throaty zingers and that leveling, dead-pan stare, she could always crack me up something awful.

Bea Arthur, you will be sorely missed, but we’re grateful that your work lives on in those wonderful Lifetime marathons of the Golden Girls reruns.

Say hi to your Ma for us, Pussycat. And R.I.P.

Tina Fey and the Bookaneers

Oh, cry cry cry, all you write about is Tina Fey and and The Golden Girls.

Well ex-cuuuuuuse us!  Get your own blog, whinecakes!

Um.  So today, I came across this video of 30 Rock’s Tina Fey on Sesame Street.  She plays a pirate who loves to read - a bookaneer!  Peep this and fall in love all over again:

Totally awesome.  And VERY relevant, in light of this week’s pirate news.  Pirates are totally in vogue right now.

Tina Fey truly has her finger on the pulse of the nation.
