With Thanksgiving around the corner, I’m sadly short on time to recap So You Think You Can Dance’s Top 12 show. Forgive me? Thanks! Itty bitty reviews and dance videos (from MJ) below.
It’s the last week our couples dance together before drawing new partners next week. Sadness for some and joy for others:
MY BOTTOM 3 COUPLES: Karen Hauer & Victor Smalley, Noelle Marsh & Russell Ferguson, and Mollee Gray & Nathan Trasoras
Ellenore Scott & Ryan Di Lello - Lindy Hop (Karla Heiney) - “I’ve Got To Be A Rug Cutter” by Boilmaker Jazz Band (VIDEO): Ever consistent, these two gave another solid performance - both managing to keep their energy up-up-up for what was an exhausting, kicky, bouncy, flippy number. These two are a strong technical partnership and can only benefit if they each get a new partner with whom they have reeeeally super-fire-hot chemistry because that’s the one thing Ellenore & Ryan have lacked.
Ellenore & Ryan 2nd Dance - Broadway (Spencer Liff) - “Razzle Dazzle” from Chicago (VIDEO): Spencer’s choreography was really perfection for these two. Nice song choice and steps that completely showcased Ellenore’s quirky, ticky style and skill at playing a big character. Holy slide splits, she’s amazing to watch! Ryan was solid too, but Ellenore was in the spotlight. I feel Ellenore’s only weakness is she plays “roles” well, but she doesn’t always convince me that she’s IN the role. I’d like to see her throw herself in emotionally. Still, what a talented lady.
Kathryn McCormick & Legacy Perez - Jazz (Sonya Tayeh) - “So Deep” by Hot Chip (VIDEO): A very “Sonya” number: jazz hands, lunges. Kathryn plays a hottie that makes Legacy “quiver” whenever he sees her. Legacy got to go hog wild with his breakdancing moves in this. Will he “crab walk” right into the Top 10? Kathryn was equally strong and seems to be gaining momentum - could she be a dark horse?
Kathryn & Legacy 2nd Dance - Waltz (Jean-Marc and France Genereux) - “Your Guardian Angel” by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (VIDEO): Aha, a very clever “back story” from Jean-Marc: this particular waltz is about a guy who never got a chance to dance (Legacy) until the sweet angel of DANCE guides him to learn and grow (Kathryn). I almost got verklempt watching - it’s soooo this couple’s story. The waltz itself was a bit clunky on Legacy’s part, but such excellent and tender chemistry between them. It didn’t seem much of a stretch for Kathryn to play this gentle and patient mentor to the “green” dancer in Legacy. She was stellar. I admit that I’ll miss this couple - you can tell they truly support one another in their crybaby ways.
Karen Hauer & Victor Smalley - Argentine Tango (Tony Meredith & Melanie LaPatin) - “Montserrat” by Orquesta del Plata (VIDEO): This new latin couple get off to a good start with an intense dance - according to the judges. I still think Victor is gorgeous, but he didn’t fully win me over in this number. I still want Miss Karen to go far, but I just don’t know if voters will get on board with her regal attitude.
Karen & Victor 2nd Dance - Hip Hop (Laurieann Gibson) - “Moving Mountains” by Usher (VIDEO): Suddenly, they’re showing clips of Laurieann being caring and inspirational during rehearsal. Hmph, I miss her task-master, drill sergeant clips. The pair are totally out of sync here - who is to blame? You know I’m a Karen fan, so I blame Victor! The judges are not so impressed. Adam makes the mistake of semi-blaming the choreography and gets a death stare from Laurieann. Eep! Something tells me these two will definitely be in the bottom tomorrow night and very likely packing their bags.
Mollee Gray & Nathan Trasoras - Hip Hop (Jamal Sims) - “Ring-a-Ling” by Black Eyed Peas (VIDEO): These two are way to young an cheesy for me. There’s no sexual chemistry between them which makes any semi senssss-sewal (as Nigel says) choreography very superficial and awkward for us viewers. As I’ve said from the beginning (which Nigel echoed!), I look forward to this pair splitting up because they both need more mature partners to keep them out of this “I’m chasing you round the playground and pulling your pigtails” vibe. Pity for whichever guy gets Mollee as a partner. Like, can you imagine Ryan Di Lello with her? He’d come off as a pedophile just because she acts so immature for her age…
Mollee & Nathan 2nd Dance - Can-Can (Tyce DiOrio) - “Cancan Suite” by Offenbach/Ponchielli (VIDEO): This is just going to be a one-time dance style, right? I mean, they already used like, the one Can-Can song we all know, what’s next really? It was pretty dang gimmicky. The stand-out moment for me was (as per usual) Nathan’s series of foreverforeverforever spins. He’s gorgeous when he does that (and annoying pretty much any other time). Again, too Disney, so if they survive the week, let’s get them new partners ASAP.
Noelle Marsh & Russell Ferguson - Samba (Tony Meredith & Melanie LaPatin) - “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira (VIDEO): Hips DON’T lie and Noelle’s said to me “I don’t like doing this - iiiieeeccchh…” Yeah, she was not that great in this number - too chaste, too pure. Needed more fuego and more dirrty. Russell did fine.
Noelle & Russell 2nd Dance- Contemporary (Tyce DiOrio) - “A Case of You” by Diana Krall (VIDEO): Was that Katee Shean in the rehearsal? These two did alright, but I’m not a fan of Tyce’s “asymmetrical chaos” choreography (as the judges called it). They had to smear paint on one another, but they only did it once - what gives? I want more more more paint!
Ashleigh Di Lello & Jakob Karr - Jazz (Sonya Tayeh) - “Time Flies” by Lykke Li (VIDEO): I didn’t think Ashleigh sank into her movements as comfortably as some of the other women would have. There was a stiffness to even her hunched over, dead arms poses. But we don’t care about that. We only care that these two are one of the best couples to watch and now they have to split up! Everyone’s crying after the dance: Ashleigh can’t stop crying over losing Jakob as her partner and BFF; Mary’s crying over the beauty of their dance and their upcoming separation; and Sonya cries after Nigel says she’s one of his faovrite choreographers.
Ashleigh & Jakob 2nd Dance - Cha-Cha (Jean-Marc and France Genereux) - “Cha Cha Heels” by Rosabel feat. Jeanie Tracy (VIDEO): Ashleigh got to be in her element by Cha-Chaing her tush off in this “battle over a chair” routine. A very sexy, high energy performance by this couple with lots of Latin Ballroom-style face pulling (which the judges dubbed the “hungry jazz stare”, “the look of surprise” and “the point-wink-tilt-head-at-audience”). It suited them and the judges predict they will “waltz into the Top 10″ - har har har barf. Funny how Ashleigh has more chemistry with Jakob than she did with her husband during their audition - OUCH! Anyway, I’m gonna miss this pairing more than I thought I would.
That’s that! I won’t be recapping the elimination show (sorry, but a gal’s gotta get her Turkey Day preparation on), so watch the episode for free here. Also, don’t forget to vote in the poll below: WHICH SYTYCD Top 12 COUPLE WILL YOU MISS THE MOST?
