16 And Pregnant: A Sad Update

The Rendon Family, earlier this year

We all hear about 16 and Pregnant’s Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley all the time, Maci Bookout and Farrah Abraham have been in all sorts of magazines, and even Catelynn Lowell has been featured here and there. All are alumnas of 16 and Pregnant and currently showcased on Teen Mom. Besides one follow-up special on the first season of 16 and Pregnant, the rest of the girls have dropped out of our collective radar.

Until now. Remember Ebony Jackson? She, along with boyfriend Josh Rendon wanted to join the Air Force upon her graduation from high school. Unfortunately, she was pregnant, so she and Josh got married and he enlisted. Time has passed, and things are not so good: their daughter was just taken away by the Arkansas Department of Human Services and they’ve been charged with maintaining a drug premises and unauthorized use of another’s property to facilitate a crime, as well as misdemeanor child endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance. The place sounds absolutely filthy, and I suppose it’s for the best.

If Ebony and Josh had signed up/been tapped for Teen Mom, things might be different. They’d have a hell of a lot more money, for one thing, but they’d also be held accountable in different ways. Look at Amber and Gary: they might live like total pigs, but they don’t have feces smeared on their walls. It’s pretty early in the case and both are currently free on bond, but it makes me wonder what happened to the other teens who didn’t end up on Teen Mom or Teen Mom 2. Does MTV have future responsibility for these girls, or does responsibility end when filming stops? I suppose the same could be said for True Life subjects: they’ve made their own decisions, now they need to live with them.

It’s just a sad state of affairs. No glove, no love!

Mean baby daddy makes baby cry

Just when I thought MTV had hit rock bottom with 16 and Pregnant baby daddies, along came Adam LindChelsea Houska, what were you THINKING.  He should be dead to you for treating you the way he does and for sending that text!  No child needs a father who treats her mother with such blatant hatred and disrespect.  Also, MTV, you expect me to believe there is no snow on the ground in South Dakota around Christmastime?  Really?  Fix the editing!

This season so far differs from season one in two respects: all of the baby daddys are douchebags, and all of the baby mamas describe themselves as wild/crazy/party girls.  Last season we had Ebony Jackson, who with her baby daddy Josh Rendon had planned to join the Air Force after graduating from high school.  Josh was not exactly the greatest catch in the world, but he did what he could to support Ebony while preparing to enter the Air Force himself.  There was Maci Bookout (whose baby daddy, Ryan Edwards, we have already dissed and dismissed), overachieving, involved, and college bound.  Whitney Purvis, who seemed kind of lost and fragile, but had Weston Gosa’s support to lean on.  And, of course, Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra, who want nothing but the best for their daughter.  One party girl, Farrah Abraham and one, um, lazy girl, Amber Portwood, were also featured.

So far, 3 out of the 10 episodes this season have featured four young women living in vastly different parts of the country (North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and South Dakota), all with loser (ex)boyfriends, but all with seemingly strong support systems of family and friends.  What’s the deal here, MTV?  I realize ratings are everything, but why go for the same story every time?  Can’t we see a young woman with a supportive boyfriend?  A boyfriend who realizes his responsibility to himself, to his girl, to his baby?  Is that too much to ask?  I suppose for now it has to be enough that Nikkole, Valerie, and Chelsea seem to be dedicated mothers who are interested in their children.  I do wonder who will end up on Teen Mom—hopefully whoever does will be SINGLE.

And, lord, the previews for next week’s episode don’t look very promising, although it seems to be a departure from the last couple “I love my boyfriend, oh yeah he treats me like crap, but it’ll get better when the baby comes, oh wait, it didn’t” episodes.  Lori Wickelhaus from Kentucky considers giving her baby boy, Aidan, up for adoption.  And I think her baby daddy actually cares!
