I’m standing by my statement that Jane Lynch is the best thing about Glee.  For more proof, just watch her appearance on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien last night…

A: Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”

Garnering over 50% of the vote, the show’s pilot performance swept the poll!  Though the song’s been covered and karaoke’d to the point of irony since it was first released by Journey in 1981, it’s easy to see why it hasn’t lost popularity.  Amazing working class lyrics, catchy-as-hell keyboard intro, and one of the most fist-pumpiest choruses of all time.  And I think the gang at Glee have done an AMAZING job covering it.  I have to admit, that song sorta gives me chills.

Glee Cast

Week after week, it’s Glee fever!  The show has quickly become a cultural phenomenon across the States, with seven songs from the series in the top 200 of iTunes’ Top Songs chart, over two million Glee songs purchased online, and the cast’s rendition of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” gone certified Gold [Source].

Obviously, we need to start Glee-ing up this here blog.  Let’s start with a poll…

Joss Whedon to Direct Episode of Glee

Geeks everywhere, rejoice!  It’s true, Joss Whedon has signed on to direct an episode of Glee!

As many of you already know, the mastermind behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse basically invented “the musical episode.”  Please review Buffy S06E07 “Once More With Feeling” for proof.

More recently, Whedon directed that whole Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog thing, starring America’s sweetheart Neil Patrick Harris. Obviously, the man knows a thing or two about musical television.  Read his blog post discussing the stint for just a hint of detail.

Nerds: are you stoked?  I think this could be awesome.

Get Ready to Join the Glee Club Tonight!

Oooh, can you smell it?  Fall season premieres are brewing!

On tap for tonight is the first non-pilot episode of Glee, the buzzed-about high school Glee Club comedy.  The pilot aired back in May following American Idol (sweet spot!) and has been available online for quite some time.  Tonight, however, we finally get our next look.

Created by Ryan Murphy (Popular, Nip/Tuck), Glee follows William McKinley High School’s show choir as it it’s taken over by Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), an idealistic Spanish teacher who hopes to revive the team to its former glory.

The Glee Club consists of a slew of lovable losers and a handful of misguided popular kids, including superstar and popular kid whipping post Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) and former star quarterback Finn Hudson (Colin Monteith).  Singing back up are diva Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley), flamboyant Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), wheelchair-bound Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale), and goth Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz).

Glee: Jane Lynch as Sue SylvesterAlso in the mix are the Glee Club’s two arch-nemesis groups: the cheerleading squad (or “Cheerios”) and a football-teamful of bullies.

I finally caught the show’s pilot this past weekend and I think Glee’s got promise.  It has some tone issues, can be overly cheesy, and has a few stereotypical characters, but it’s quite pleasant to look at, has got some great one-liners, and the musical numbers (including a rousing rendition of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” in the pilot) will leave you positively… gleeful!  SNAP!

And best of all, we’ve got the amazing Jane Lynch (Best in Show, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, other misc. Christopher Guest and Judd Apatow movies), as head cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, a woman unafraid to be absolutely cruel and crass.  Sample quote: “You think this is hard? I’m living with Hepatitis, that’s hard!”  LOVE HER!
