Syfy Shows Are Great!

Alphas: Syfy’s newest original show
Last night kicked off the best part of the summer, after Pretty Little Liars, So You Think You Can Dance, and The Nine Lives of Chloe King: Syfy Monday night original programming! For three hours, Syfy featured original, hour long dramas: Eureka, Warehouse 13, Alphas. It was no Dinoshark or Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, but a solid evening of entertainment, nonetheless.
Eureka, now in it’s fourth season, has had some ups and downs, but last night’s premiere was a great effort. Once again, things have gone a bit topsy-turvy in the nutty little scientific haven, but they’ve got the season to figure everything out. I’m not a regular watcher, but it’s a great to dive in a little now and then.
My true love of Monday nights is Warehouse 13, and boy is the third season off to a great start! Aptly titled “The New Guy,” Aaron Ashmore (Veronica Mars, In Plain Sight, Smallville) has joined the cast as Pete’s new partner, since Myka went AWOL at the end of season 2. Steve Jinks, his character, is a Buddhist who can tell when people are lying, which fits pretty well with Pete’s vibing abilities and Myka’s encyclopedic wealth of knowledge. It was a little touch and go with him last night–the writers do a great job of keeping viewers on their toes, but I think he’s a great addition to the cast. Now that Leena appears to be back, perhaps Claudia will get more of a chance in the field, with either Pete or Myka? Last night’s artifacts–Jimi Hendrix’ guitar, pages of Shakespeare’s lost folio, a mention of Pete wearing Abraham Lincoln’s hat and wanting to free Mrs. Frederick–point towards a fabulous season. We already have the beginnings of a season-arcing mystery: the mysterious man who planted the folio pages, and the (perhaps fake) FBI agent with an annoying accent who helped him. Who is he? He was in shadow! And it was nice to see H.G. Wells again; perhaps she’ll be redeemed (again) somewhere down the line. It would not be a terrible thing for her to have a spinoff!
The long awaited series premiere of Alphas was last, but not least! David Strathairn heads up a team of, well, 
superhumans. I PROMISE it is better than Heroes. There were some cryptic references to how he met each member of the team, so expect backstory to come out as the series progresses. Basically, David Strathairn is the leader of a team of crack, crimesolving, superhero types, each with a different ability. Bill Harken (Malik Yoba, hello!) can pump up his adrenaline and perform feats of strength, Warren Christie as Cameron Hicks is hyperkinetic, able to move in crazy fast weird ways. Nina Theroux (Laura Mennell) is excellent at influencing people and making them do things, but she seems to have a very dark past. Ryan Cartwright plays Gary Bell, a seemingly autistic young man who can see and read wireless transmissions, like radio waves and cell phone calls. Last but not least, the final member of the team is Azita Ghanizada as Rachel Pirzad, who can finely enhance any one of her senses at a time, to identify the tiniest, most obscure clues. They work together, seemingly on regular cases that leave police perplexed, but also against an extremist group of, well, Alphas, bent on destroying them. The premiere episode was a solid outing: I enjoyed it! Here, watch it and tell me what you think (and be honest!):
