The guys behind South Park and The Hangover are always a bit controversial, but usually for what they put in front of the camera, not what’s going on behind it. But not this week!
Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the two usually hysterical guys behind South Park, had to issue a less than hilarious apology for plagiarizing jokes from, of all places, CollegeHumor.com. Really guys? College Humor users are supposed to upload clips from your show without permission, not the other way around! But when some jokes in South Park’s recent Inception episode matched up almost word for word with lines from an Inception parody on the site, Matt and Trey had no choice but to acknowledge what had happened. And, unlike most plagiarists, they did it directly, admitting they “accidentally” took jokes from the video because: “We’re stupid and we just threw it together.” Well, that’s pretty honest. Of course that doesn’t mean there’s not some questionable elements to their explanation. They claim that the only reason the mix-up happened is because they couldn’t get their hands on a copy of Inception to consult so had to watch the College Humor video and were mistaken in thinking some of the jokes were real lines from the movie. Suuuuureee….I think the South Park guys have enough Hollywood clout that they could get a copy of Inception 2 rushed over to their studio if they really wanted one. And that hasn’t even been made!
On the movie side of things, there was a spot of controversy on the set of The Hangover 2 (the sequel to a little comedy that came out awhile back called The Hangover, maybe a few of our hipper indie readers saw it) about the casting of a cameo role: Mel Gibson. You can see why he would leap at the chance: after his first publicized rant a few years ago, Mel went the serious route and apologized through all the appropriate venues. But you can’t do that spiel twice. So you go the other way and take on a role that allows you to laugh at yourself and show the world that you’re just a fun-loving guy at heart. Tom Cruise was having a PR nightmare before Tropic Thunder, but one fat suit and script full of swear words later and he was good ol’ Tom again.
The only thing standing in the way of Mel’s triumphant, side-splitting return to silver screen glory? A bearded comedian that he has probably never heard of. “Cast and crew” apparently fought with director Todd Phillips about Mel’s appearance, but all signs point to Zach Galifianakis (otherwise known as the satchel-wearing, one-man wolf-pack Alan) being the one to really protest, unwilling to help Mel erase his hate-filled rants from the minds of audiences. Good for you, Zach! Furious sources close to Mel have pointed out the hypocrisy of refusing to cast Mel when Mike Tyson, a convicted rapist, appeared in The Hangover, and to that I say: fair point! But hey, Liam Neeson is going to take Mel’s spot in the movie, and he’s way cooler anyway. Plus he has far fewer recorded racist rants floating around the internet.

I do like the manner in which you have presented this specific issue and it does indeed offer us some fodder for consideration. On the other hand, from just what I have observed, I just hope when the actual remarks pack on that people today keep on issue and not start on a tirade involving some other news of the day. All the same, thank you for this outstanding point and while I do not necessarily agree with it in totality, I regard the point of view.
