Q: What is Your Favorite Christmas TV Episode?
A: Six Feet Under, Pilot Episode
Upping Friends‘ holiday armadillo episode by just a hair, Six Feet Under beat out the rest of the bunch with its pilot episode. Originally aired in 2001, the episode kicked the show off with its first of many opening deaths: that of Fisher and Sons Funeral Home owner Nathaniel Fisher on Christmas Eve, by way of bus hitting hearse. The misfortune brings the Fisher family to gather at the home of matriarch Ruth (who’s been having an affair with her hairdresser), including eldest son Nate (who’s been at a food co-op in Seattle and having sex with strangers on planes), brother David (a closeted homosexual dating a black policeman), and sister Claire (an angsty teenager who took some crystal meth that same night). The multi-faceted pilot laid ground for what was soon to become the most original, fascinating shows of the ’00s.
Dark pick, readers! Though I admit, it was my choice as well. Hope everyone enjoys a tragedy-free holiday season.
