Interesting news today: it’s been announced that The Time Traveler’s Wife will be adapted into a television show. Friends creator Marta Kauffman and Warner Bros. are teaming up with ABC to turn the beloved Audrey Niffenegger novel (and now hit movie!) into a weekly TV series.
As you probably all know by now, the story follows librarian Henry DeTamble, a man with a rare genetic disorder that causes him to time travel spontaneously (oopsies!). He meets and falls in love with artist/future wife Clare Abshire at different periods throughout their lives, they have to deal with his sporadic disappearances, his knowledge of (sometimes painful) future events, they’re crazy in love, yada yada yada.
The movie stars Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams as Henry and Clare.
Industry insiders say ABC has been in talks re: doing a TV adaptation for years - predating the movie. The plot will explore the romantic relationship between Henry and Clare rather than continuing where the novel left off (SPOILER ALERT: it’s a downer).
Hmmm… now, I haven’t seen the movie but I DID read the book, which I found mediocre but immensely entertaining (beach read!). I actually think The Time Traveler’s Wife would make a really fantastic television show - the possibility of time travel opens the door for a wide range of interesting storylines and visually stunning scenes. Anchoring the activity around a romantic relationship and the strain time travel causes just interests me further. I’d love to more about Henry and Clare’s daily lives (Ack! Henry time-traveled right into my 4th period P.E. class’s game of dodgeball!).
Other time travel television shows I can think of are Quantum Leap and Journeyman, which were successful and unsuccessful, respectively. We’ll have to see how this one pans out. I sure hope the suits don’t fudge it up!
