jeanine mason - winner of so you think you can dance season 5I am at peace, readers. Ommm (nom, nom, nom)…

Yes, all is right in my little world of So You Think You Can Dance. It’s amazing, really. Apparently I’ve wanted sarcastic, dedicated, chunkily-proportioned underdog: JEANINE MASON to win this deflated season for some time and now that she has? I’m satisfied.

Sure, runner-up Brandon Bryant “deserved” it - he’s an absolute powerhouse, but I haven’t connected with him in the heart parts, and it seems that counts for a lot among us viewers.

Tonight we revisited this season’s “memorable dances” whilst whittling the Top 4 down to the sole possessor of the “America’s Favorite Dancer” title and the $250,000 smackeroon prize.

Miss the finale or want to re-watch the dances? Video’s below, y’all (by MJ)!

TOP 20 GROUP NUMBER (Reprise): “A Brand New Day” from The Wiz - Broadway by Tyce DiOrio. VIDEO

On the judging panel tonight? Uh, basically every single SYTYCD judge evs: Lil C, Mia Michaels, Tyce DiOrio, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe himself.

FIRST ELIMINATION: Kayla Radomski gets cut. She is undoubtedly a gorgeous dancer. Especially loved her in the “Addiction” dance (coming up below), and she was almost consistently amazing as a performer in each number. I will miss her sweet, sobbing grandpa most of all. VIDEO

TOP 8 GROUP DANCE (Reprise): Broadway by Mia Michaels - “One” from A Chorus Line - SURPRISE!!! All of the judges (except Lil C) come out from behind the mirrors at the end in tuxes and do a few jazzy steps. Adorable! VIDEO

WINNER RESULTS: It’s down to Jeanine and Brandon…who has been voted as the winner by America? Iiiiiiiit’s… JEANINE MASON!! VIDEO

My final thoughts:

1) I’m fine - even happy - with the outcome. How about you? Do you agree that Jeanine should win?
2) Is this terrible encouragement to stage mothers across the world to force their children to take up things like dance, even when they’re miserable like Mama Mason did to Jeanine? Something to think about.
3) Why wasn’t Janette in the Top 4 again? She’s a HOT TAMALE, YES SHE IS!
4) Congratulations, Jeanine, for sneaking by and swiping that crown!

Wondering where you’ll get your next dance fix from? Never fear! Season 3 of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew premieres this Sunday, and in just one month, So You Think You Can Dance will be back with its 6th Season (September 9th on FOX)!

Buy a ticket for the Hot Tamale Train and join me then, won’t you? Until that time comes though, I’m gonna enjoy the month of extra sleep on Wednesday and Thursday nights when I won’t be recapping! This is me, *jazz handsing* off-stage. Erin out!

  1. JJ Says:

I was happy Jeanine won, but felt bad that Brandon was just hustled off the stage with no flowers or recap like the others got. I was surprised no one picked the crash test dummy dance. As for Janette, I think she didn’t make it because her solos were kinda boring. I think the general public like me weighs those solos much more heavily than the dancer/choreographer public–I voted for Jeanine in the end because of her solo. Thanks for your blog–it’s been a must-read for me since I started watching the show!

  2. Annie Says:

I am ecstatic that Jeanine won. I think she’s grown the most over the season and she has such an amazing personality. i too was sad that Jeanette was not in the final 4. I thought for sure she’d win, she was definitely in my opinion the stongest and had a great personality. She took everything thrown at her and dominated it. However in the end I am happy that out of the Top 4 Jeanine won. She’s a great dancer and she deserves it! And to JJ, they did recap for Brandon. They did his and Jeanine’s before they announced who won and he got flowers, they show himi holding some when they show the Top 20 after Jeanine says “These kids”.

  3. ERIN Says:

@JJ: I really liked the Crash Test Dummy number, too! Would’ve preferred seeing that again over the Vitolio/Asuka Waltz.

@Annie: I agree and hey, maybe we’ll be seeing Janette on Dancing With the Stars :) She seems like she’s be a perfect fit (can dance anything, workhorse, bubbly personality) - as long as Cheryl Burke doesn’t mind sharing the spotlight with another fiery, bobbed haircut brunette!

  4. Anku Says:

Yes… Thanks to you Erin… Your blog was the Best SYTYCD Blog… If there wasn’t you & your blog… I couldn’t be sharing this incredible Show with the world almost parallel… :D
And of course i’m glad that she won the crown & the money ;D
Again thank you sooo much for the videos. Hope to see your cuts again… Goodluck ;)

  5. Kay Says:

I wasn’t rooting for anyone, but I would have picked Brandon over Jeanine for talent, but Jeanine over Brandon over personality…anyway, it was great getting recaps from this blog…..hopefully you’ll be doing reviews for America’s Best Dance Crew 4 (my 2nd fav dance show!)

  6. ERIN Says:

@Anku: Thanks so much! I hope to recap Season 6 of SYTYCD starting September :)

@Kay: I’ve heard mixed reviews of ABDC so far. What’d you think of the premiere (I haven’t seen it yet)? Maybe if it catches my interest I’ll recap…

  7. Kay Says:

@Erin - The premiere was AWESOME! I think because of the lack of personality and oomph missing in SYTYCD this season, I’m liking ABDC 4 A LOT more…the crews are even more talented than the last (if that’s possible), they’ve got some really diverse crews and the energy is really great on the show…..so far, it’s great, i suggest checking out the first episode =)

  8. June Smith Says:

Erin, this is a late response, but couldn’t help myself. I was lucky to interview Brandon, Randi, Kayla and Caitlin before the San Jose, CA season 5 tour show. I also met Jeanine at the after-party.

I got only 30 minutes to interview all four at once! Your blog will fill in some blanks for me as I missed the last two shows while on vacation in Europe.

I didn’t realize that Brandon was No. 2, thanks for that.
I’d like to add that he exuded lots of personality in the interview and when he saw me at the after-party he gave me a huuuuge hug.

    Keep up the good work!
