So You Think You Can Dance 5: Top 16 Elimination

In the spirit of dance for tonight’s So You Think You Can Dance recap, we at Square Eyes join the world by giving a big R.I.P., “Shhhaa-mon!” and “Heeeee-heee!” to Michael Jackson. Much respect from Kat and I.
But life moves on and for this entry, it’s onto the results and videos from tonight’s elimination (clips from MJ’s):
First of all, the show opened with a group number that actually made sense. A “No noo! Too sexy!!” dance where everyone was copping a feel and that fused Ballroom and Hip Hop dancing to “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)” by Pitbull. Thanks to Dmitry Chaplin and Tabitha & Napoleon for a simple storyline that I could follow. I’m still waiting for Mia Michaels to explain last week’s group number. (VIDEO)
Wow, so I guess they filmed this not long after MJ died today because Nigel speaks about Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson’s recent deaths and pays tribute to them. They go to break showing “Thriller” although it just left me wanting to see more than a few seconds - how about instead we fill the hour with Michael Jackson music videos? I digress. (VIDEO)
After commercial we dive right in and learn that (rightfully) Asuka & Vitolio are in the Bottom 3 and must DANCE FOR THEIR LIVES. Likewise, Janette & Brandon, Randi & Evan, Melissa & Ade and Jeanine & Phillip (pout) are all safe. I agree, even though I am not really a Phillip fan - they were much better than Karla & Jonathan and Caitlin & Jason last night. Sorry Jeanine, hopefully next week you can claw your way out from under Chbeeb’s shadow and get some recognition for your skills. (VIDEO)
The remaining 3 couples are up next - 2 will be in danger. Last night I said it should be (love ‘em as I do) Karla & Jonathan and Caitlin & Jason and… I’m RIGHT! That means new couple Kupono & Kayla are safe to run to the pit of “we are the champions” contestants this week. I’m relieved that all of my favorite couples are safe! (VIDEO)
Meanwhile, as our Bottom 3 prep to DANCE FOR THEIR LIVES, we watch a group of pint-sized (and adolescent) tykes called the Rage Boyz Crew do a Hip Hop routine choreographed by Tiffany Burton. Cat squeals a lot over how adorable the leading lil boy is and I agree! Was the dancing phenomenal? No, but they were energetic and entertaining to watch and that’s good enough for me. (VIDEO)
Ok, let’s watch the solos! First up is Asuka who does a rather sloppy-frantic ballroom solo. In general, I feel she’s the weakest of the Bottom 3 gals, and she didn’t redeem herself tonight. Next is Vitolio, who I thought was fab. I just love his jumps and extensions. So…sinewy. Then it’s Karla with an interesting and compelling Contemporary piece, although her nerves seem to surface because she wobbles on some spins (hey, there’s the standing split move she always does again!). Finally, it’s dimpled-delight Jonathan who has a tough task with salsa-ing solo through his number. Actually, I was pretty impressed and thought he didn’t *just* look like a Ballroom dancer - he mixed things up and did some tumbling too. (VIDEO)
Commercial, yada yada, and our final Bottom couple is up! Caitlin does her usual limber-acrobatics-filled solo, which is no longer as novel to me as in her first audition…but I think she’s better than Asuka. Our last solo of the night comes from golden boy Jason. I don’t remember much of it. A lot of jumps and rolling around on the floor going on. I’m still not on-board with him and think his solo was the weakest. (VIDEO)
Off go the judges to deliberate and we get a performance by The Veronicas singing “Take Me On the Floor”. And this is me fast forwarding. (VIDEO)
ELIMINATED: Asuka Kondoh and Jonathan Platero (VIDEO)
Well, I’m cool with this elimination and - hello! - as I dared to dream last night, we now have Karla and Vitolio as new partners! Fingers crossed that they’ll be a good match and can explode and amaze us next week! They’ve got the potential!
Cat announces that on Monday, FOX will (for the first time everrrr) re-broadcast the American Idol Top 13 episode featuring the music of Michael Jackson. Hmmm, is it a touching tribute or shameless excuse for ad dollars? Discuss.
I’m gonna go listen to the sweet sounds of “I’ll Be There“, close my eyes and shake my head in mourning. Peace y’all.
