Gabi Rojas So You Think You Can Dance auditionLast week’s 2-hour season premiere of So You Think You Can Dance covered auditions in New York and Denver. Methinks so far, so good since I was already alternating between crying, cringing and being captivated by some amazing dancers (and still 4 cities to go!). Initial thoughts and videos of stand-out performances…now!

Gabi Rojas — Contemporary Audition (VIDEO): On this season of SYTYCD, Gabi will be playing the role of “dancer with debilitating rheumatoid arthritis.” But she is talented and it is bittersweet that her dance career will probably get cut short as a result of her condition *sniffle*. She had really quirky and unique movements - I would love for her to get through to the finals.

Elias Holloway — Pop Lock Audition (VIDEO): This boy is too cute for words (and his little brother is even cuter) - it was a fun routine to watch. We kids love watching pop lockers, don’t we? Unfortunately, Elias didn’t make it to Vegas (not well-rounded enough in other styles) and his bro is too young to compete, but hopefully we’ll see more from both in the near future. Bros before reality shows.

Kellen Stancil - Contemporary Audition (VIDEO): Oh my god, why are you making me cry ALREADY, TV Show?? Kellen’s dance with an umbrella as a prop was lovely on its own, but when he explained that it symbolized his recently passed aunt, I was put over the edge in lip-biting verklemptness. Good luck, Kellen!

Natalie Reid — Contemporary Audition (VIDEO): I remember red-head Natalie from the annoying manufactured drama last season where they pit her against her roommate and best bud, Katee “Best Female Dancer of Season 4″ Shean. But Nat’s back for her moment in the spotlight and she’s better than ever. They should put her through to finals for a double-whammy: viewers can enjoy her dancing and also have an excuse to see Katee support her in the audience. Heart Katee!

Brandon Bryant — Contemporary Audition (VIDEO): Whoa, I loved Brandon’s performance! Really powerful, strong dancer with fluid movements. Plus, I’m an “O Fortuna/Carmina Burana” fan because of the drama it adds to any movie trailer, slo-mo action film sequence and/or dance audition on a reality show. Will he show enough personality to make it through? We’ll see!

Kayla Radomski - Contemporary Audition (VIDEO): Just when I thought my tears were drying from Kellen’s audition, they brought out Kayla and her grandparents who’ve helped raise her and sacrificed a lot to put her through dance school. The Dionne Farris rendition of “Blackbird” matched her dance really well, but honestly, it was Grandpappy Radomski that had me welling up again. How can you stay stone-faced when a burly ol’ man is choking back tears of pride for his little granddaughter? You just can’t. *sob*

Bah, I’m hooked! And PS - Cat Deeley is possibly the best reality show host ever.
