Hey dummies! Time for a history lesson!
Guiding Light began as a 15-minute radio series in 1937 on NBC Radio. The soap debuted as a television series years later on CBS, in 1952. Clocking in at 72 years, the Guinness Book of World Records has cited Guiding Light as the longest-running television drama EVER.
It was announced today that CBS would officially be switching off Guiding Light this year, with the final episodes to air in September. The show’s ratings have been declining significantly over the past few years.
TV Squad posits that, among other causes of death, soap operas in general have never recovered from the loss of audiences suffered during the O.J. Simpson trial. This strikes me as somewhat foreshadowing, as while reality started killing the soap back in the ’90s, reality TV is certainly smothering television today. Deep, right?!?!
AND THANKS A LOT, O.J.!!!
Ah well. Don’t forget to tell your grannies they can still find their favorite episodes of Guiding Light online. Time to evolve, grandma.
