Pick-up Artist 2: Vanilla Reality TV w/One Nutty Host

Welcome to Square Eyes!

What’s a gal to say in her first entry? Maybe something about how I watch snooty shows like “Mad Men” and witty comedies like “The Office” so you think I’m clever and sophisticated in my TV consumption…?

…nah, I’d rather confess that last night, I went out of my way to watch VH1’s The Pick-up Artist 2 (link accessible only in the US).

It‘s definitely not something I’m proud of so there’s no point in trying to shame me. For those of you who are not reality trash connoisseurs, it’s the second season of The Pick-up Artist - a “meh” reality show where shy, socially inept guys learn different methods to charm women right out of their lady-drawers and compete to become THE Master Pick-up Artist.

“Wait Erin, it just sounds like another transform-toad-into-prince-and-LOL-at-their-countless-social-faux-pas reality show.” Yes it totally is, BUT the best (and also the worst) part about the show is its host and geek-to-chic guru: “Mystery”.

Mystery - host of Pick-up Artist 2

Hey! Now don’t go clambering to get a piece of that flamboyant, rock and roll(?) mojo all at once! Just soak it allll in - his boa, binoculars ’round the neck, furry Dr. Seuss hat… that is a LOT of flair for one man. But THAT is Mystery, the messiah to the show’s gawkard contestants and alleged expert in the art of wooing the females.

I’ll admit that on The Pick-up Artist 2, Mystery seems pretty intelligent, supportive of contestants and down-to-earth (despite considering himself the modern-day Casanova, dressing more femme than the girls he picks up and, oh right, calling himself Mystery). I really just don’t get why this old dude with his ridiculous outfits and makeup is supposedly irresistible to women. Is it just me or do you sense latent dork under all that flashy garb?

And yet, that frustration is a big part of why I end up watching - to gape in total disbelief that this guy has his own show (for two seasons!). Be warned: The Pick-up Artist 2 can become a guilty pleasure addiction if you don’t watch your step. In all fairness, the show isn’t mean-spirited (contestants get along, Mystery and fellow judges are all very encouraging) and you’ll end up rooting for the contestants who are all sweet, lonely guys still stuck in that bumbling adolescent phase. It’s not a bad option for Sunday night TV; easy-to-watch junk food for the brain. Do you dare?
